A Life Once Lost - Iron Gag

Ferret

Rating - 7/10

Review John Consterdine

Following on from 2006's A Great Artist, Philadelphia powerhouse A Life Once Lost return with their new album “Iron Gag”. With their mix of Death Metal, Southern Rock and Psychedelic Rock this album is set to be something big!

Opener “Firewater Joyride” sounds rather like Lamb Of God covering Primus, although given the fact that Randy Blythe from Lamb Of God did help with the vocal production production on the record that possibly should come as no great surprise. Next track up “Detest”, while still having that Lamb Of God sound ventures into Black Label Society territory and “The Wanderer” on the other hand is a much slower, slightly melodic metalcore ballad, with slow almost acoustic bits before the blistering chorus pounces on you.

The stand out tracks on Iron Gag however appear later on in the proceedings,  the mighty “Others Die” and the more Southern Rock style of “Silence” capturing attention. Now don’t get me wrong, musically this is a great album. It's diverse throughout, the only problem is with the vocals. They all sound like Randy Blythe and, as good as that may be, you can have to much of a good thing. However I’m sure “Iron Gag” will boost ALOL into the spotlight!
