4Ft Fingers - New Beginnings Of Old Stories

Not On Your Radio

Rating - 7.5/10

Review John Lewins

On this, their fourth album, 4FT Fingers have delivered a polished set of catchy punk inflected tunes. Indeed New Beginnings Of Old Stories almost seems to be an effortless synthesis of the last thirty years or so of punk from both sides of the Atlantic.

Part Sham 69, part Green Day with a smattering of Clash and even taking a slight detour via the Levellers-esque folk punk on “The Tale Of Benjamin Lloyd” which, in truth, is a bit out of place on this record, “New Beginnings Of Old Stories” is exactly that, nothing too radical but rather a fresh perspective on some staples of the scene.

Even tales of domestic violence such as “The Escape” come wrapped up with an insistent riff and a catchy chorus and this ability to deliver a sometimes difficult message in a hook laden way helps to set 4FT Fingers apart. Much of the album is firmly mid-tempo but the band structure the songs in such a way to get maximum interest and effect out of a pretty tried and tested formula.

The unforgettable choruses in the likes of “Save Your Soul Tonight” “Thick As Thieves” and “After All This Time”, to name but three, allied to the relentlessly upbeat nature of the bands delivery means that there is a lot to like about 4FT Fingers music and as long as you're not looking for the next new wave thing you wont be disappointed.
