30 Seconds To Mars - The Kill

Virgin

Rating - 6/10

Review Shirin Hine

Film stars attempting to try their hand at the whole ‘credible rock musician’ shtick is generally rather dangerous ground (I could name names but I’d be here a mighty long time...). One of the many actors to attempt this feat is Jared Leto, probably best known (to my generation at least) as the hunky Jordan Catalano from US 90s teen drama My So-called Life.

Formed in 1998, 30 Seconds to Mars began as a small family project that has since enjoyed two sold-out runs in the UK, a well-received appearance at Download festival this summer and, most recently, a Kerrang! award for Best Single for their latest offering, The Kill, taken from the album A Beautiful Lie.

The song has already acheived massive success Stateside, and it’s not particularly hard to see why; it’s a soaring, anthemic slab of emo melodrama that’s sure to have floppy-fringed teenage girls everywhere weeping into their black nailpolish. It’s hard to take anything involving a grown man repeatedly wailing “bury, me, bury me” very seriously, but painfully trite lyrics aside, it’s actually not a bad little ditty for what it is. Accompanied by overblown, swirling crescendos, Leto’s voice overflows with angst that sounds remarkably genuine. In short, it contains all the ingredients for a surefire hit among those pesky emo kids.
