1000 Hertz - Input The Output

In At The Deep End

Rating - 6/10

Review John Lewins

2007 is the year of UK hardcore.....it is, honest! Go on and check the Chinese astrology charts and you'll see I'm right (well I actually sort of made that last bit up...). It definitely is the year though when the UK scene has gained more exposure to the mainstream than ever before.

Where this ultimately leads is anyone's guess, music this uncompromising is never going to be accepted on a wholesale scale and, as such, the bands who follow this path will have to demonstrate something unique to be able to sustain any kind of attention from anything other than the genres most ardent followers.

So what of 1000 Hertz? I'll be honest and say I'm not sure. The first three tracks fly by in a flurry of forgettable activity but by the time we get to "Protect The Fall" the band are starting to play with the song structures a bit and the slight shift in tempos within the song creates the first memorable dynamic of the record.

This is immediately followed by "Immobilised" which combines a crunching verse to a more forceful bridge and chorus to great effect. "Systems Fail" is built on some driving bass and falls away to a chorus that will go down a storm live.

You can write off "Hello I Have No Hope" as a pointless instrumental, 60 seconds or so, but it brings us nicely to "Down & Out" which for some reason reminds me of Ghost Of A Thousand's "Bored Of Math" I'm not sure why, they don't really share a riff or vocal ideal as far as I can determine but they're both great, insistent, tracks so don't worry too much!

Despite "One Too Many" starting off with a riff that almost threatens to break into "Heaven And Hell" it quickly hits you with a relentless choppy rhythm guitar married to some intense drumming that puts thoughts of Dio-era Black Sabbath beyond the back of your mind! An interesting debut from a band not afraid to push the boundaries a little, you never know, if they can get enough support they might take more chances next time around and that could be very interesting indeed.
