Derrick Green - Sepultura

Interview John Consterdine

You kicked off your European tour recently, how’s it been so far?

Derrick Green (Vocals): We started it about a week ago in Italy, it’s been pretty crazy and it kind of sucks the first week due to all the flying. Like when the terrorist attack at Glasgow airport happened, we were supposed to fly in about 10 hours after that, so we had to cancel a show in Dundee and I hate cancelling shows. However we were lucky we got a plane the next day to Glasgow, and finished two of the shows we had left. It started off kind of weird kind of fucked up, not really enjoying being in airports, sitting around with a bunch of people, but now its starting to flow a little bit better, we're getting into the touring mode and the shows have been pretty good.

Anywhere you’re looking forward to playing?

DG - I'm looking forward to Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, places I’ve never been before and Sepultura have never played in the history of the band so those places are really exciting, it’s a first for Sepultura and usually with those shows you never know what to expect.

The Dante XXI artwork is based on the Divine Comedy, is that reflected in the album itself?

DG - It’s a modern artist from Brazil who did it; we gave him the idea at the beginning of the writing process and started giving him lyrics. We wanted to show a 21st century, modern view of Dante in the artwork, in his interpretation, we didn't tell him what to do, he'd already read the stories. I think from what we gave him he used that so it was a pretty cool collaboration and he was free to do what he wanted and we're pretty much writing a soundtrack to the divine comedy.

Do you think Dante XXI has been well received?

DG - I think it was the most positive reviews that I’ve heard from people and I felt that after so many years of being together and playing that we've got even better with each album we've kind of evolved.

Andreas has said recently that there will be a new Sepultura album, can you shed anymore light on it?

DG - After this tour we plan on going into the studio again and doing the whole recording process but with our new drummer, Jean. It’s gonna be exciting considering we've been playing with Jean for almost a year now and it’s been going really well and its really easy to play with him because he really wants to be there, so its a big difference. We've had some good experiences with him as he’s someone who really wants to play. I think he’s great, he’s done really well as it’s a difficult position to be in. I mean him being from Brazil as well and knowing and playing different styles of drums and music and having the knowledge of that really helps so we can create something different from all the other albums and make people see something different.

You recently covered Sick Of It All’s “Scratch The Surface” for a SOIA tribute album, have SOIA played a big part in influencing Sepultura?

DG - Well we did that a while ago but it just came out, but yeah for me and all of us we've been really big fans for a long time and I grew up listening to that style of music so it was an honour to do a cover.

Are there any more cover versions planned, like the Revolusongs EP?

DG - I think so I like doing certain covers and changing them up a little bit. I've been listening to some crazy stuff lately, I think it was a Cure song that I thought would be a cool cover that people wouldn't even recognise and when they hear it’s the cure they'll be like “wow”. It'd be like Goth meets thrash so you never know, the door’s always open.

There’s been a lot of talk lately from Max Cavalera about Sepultura no longer being Sepultura, what do you think about that?

DG - He was saying it wasn't the same when he left the band; he does alot of talking in the media, but that’s really not our style and it never has been. When he left the band and completely deserted it and Igor was still in the band and it was constantly in the media saying this is not Sepultura blah blah blah. It wasn't Sepultura then and when will it ever be Sepultura well I guess when he’s only in it but I guess that’s not the case.

What do you think about this “Sepultura Reunion” Max keeps talking about?

DG - Its weird because we've heard the same thing but as far as we know and we've been doing the band for ten years, there’s been no contact what so ever with him, he’s never called and never talked to any of us, he doesn't even live in Brazil and we all live there so there’s never been any mention of it as far as we know. Maybe in his own mind he wants to do something but I don't know. As far as us we’re pretty much on the road now and look forward to doing a new album, that’s the reality of it, there’s nothing planned. Igor is DJ-ing right now he was just in Europe doing his thing with his wife, so he's completely happy doing that and he's wanted to do that. You know I still talk to Igor and I'm still friends with him it’s just he doesn't want to play, so fair enough you know.

What do Sepultura have left to achieve?

DG - I think there’s a lot to achieve I mean there’s still lots of people and lots of places that still want to see Sepultura that have never seen the band. I think that creating another album is another expectation which people have no idea what’s coming next. I think for us it’s to constantly keep creating and staying relative, if there’s people still talking about the band and still wondering whether it'll be bad or good, if the demand is still there we'll still be a band definitely, we love to play music whether its Sepultura or other bands we'll always do it.

As far as Sepultura goes it’s a challenge you know, it always has been and that’s the reason we've kept going. It makes it more interesting, its always more of a constant battle to stay active.

What else can we expect from you in the remainder of 2007?

Mainly touring this album and writing the next album. We're also trying to put together a Sepultura movie for the 25th anniversary of the band which will be in a few years, so we're trying to create something new as well as putting together this movie/documentary, we're working with the right people in Brazil and filming a lot of stuff we're doing now and just thinking of ideas.

So basically touring, writing and creating this film.
