Eddie Ojeda - Twisted Sister
Interview Dean Pedley
|
Legendary Twisted Sister guitarist Eddie Ojeda is currently in the UK appearing in the stage show 'Vampires Rock'. With plenty of dates all around the country there is a good chance 'Vampires Rock' will be playing at a theatre near you and the show comes highly recommended. The performance is packed with Classic Rock Anthems from Queen, AC/DC and Meat Loaf amongst others, and with Eddie on board a couple of Twisted Sister songs have also been included. Last year Eddie released his critically acclaimed solo album, 'Axes 2 Axes' that featured a Metallized version of 'Eleanor Rigby' and guest appearances from the likes of Ronnie James Dio and Dee Snider. In what is a busy period for Eddie, the rest of Twisted Sister will join him in the UK as they headline the inaugural Hard Rock Hell event being held at Butlins Minehead in November.
Eddie Ojeda HardRockHouse recently caught up with Eddie and we kicked off by talking more about his role in 'Vampires Rock'. EO - We've done three shows so far and I'm having a really good time with it. We have a great cast and I'm really happy to be a part of it; everyone that has seen it so far seems to have really enjoyed themselves which is good to see. The band is really rocking, and everybody is really working their butts off to make it a really great show. It’s most definitely on the heavy side, its not really your typical kind of musical EO - It certainly seems to be a popular show as the itinerary takes you up and down the country. I guess you will be getting chance to see a lot more of the UK than you will have done before That's exactly right, I toured here with Alice Cooper for two weeks and I have toured with Twisted Sister a few times but this show is by far the most exposure around the UK that I will have had myself which I’m really happy about The visual side of things was an important factor in getting Twisted Sister rotation on MTV so it seems to be a natural thing for you to be involved with ‘Vampires Rock’. Are you actually in character yourself in the show? EO - Well its kind of like I’m in character but I’m also kind of myself; its not a real stretch you know (laughs). The make up is a little bit different and I’m wearing a different outfit but the whole thing about being a Vampire fits right in with me really. And of course I have the Bullseye guitar with me, an old beat up one and a newer one
Vampires Rock And of course a couple of Twisted Sister songs have been added to the show EO - Yes, that’s absolutely right. We are doing two Twisted Sister songs, ‘Burn in Hell’ and ‘We're not gonna take it’. ‘Burn in Hell’ in particular works great, I start the song by coming in from the top of the stage, which represents the club and Steve and the girls come in from the bar area and the song works really well in the setting of the show. The choreography is awesome, you know it’s a very dramatic song and its cool to see one of our songs done in a different way That sounds really good. I’m really looking forward to seeing the show next month and hearing you play some of the Classic Rock anthems EO - Well there are just so many, you know. We start with ‘Welcome To The Jungle’ and then we have AC/DC ’If You Want Blood’, ’Highway To Hell’, and Queen of course, ’ We Will Rock You’, ’Killer Queen’, ’Don’t Stop Me Now’. I play a guitar solo to open the second half and then we have ’Sweet Child Of Mine’, Alice Cooper ’Poison’, ’Whole Lotta Love’, ’Dead Ringer’, ‘Bat Out Of Hell‘. And there are a couple of really old songs in there aswell, Slade ’Cum On Feel The Noize’ and Suzi Quatro ’ Devil Gate Drive’. There are just so many really cool songs that I get to play every night (laughs) I know you released a solo record last year, ‘Axes 2 Axes’, that got some great reviews. You must have been pleased with the way it came out EO - Yeah it came out really well, I am selling it at the show although we aren‘t playing anything from it. I got Ronnie James Dio singing a song on there, Dee Snider, Joe Lynn Turner, Rudy Sarzo plays bass on 2 songs, and I sing on the other songs and there are a couple of instrumentals. So it has got a little bit of everything on there really. The songs I picked for them really fitted their voices, when I wrote ‘Tonight’ I thought wow I have written a Dio song and he would be the perfect guy to sing it. We did a couple of shows together and I asked him to sing it and he said yes right away, he has his own recording studio in his house and I would send people files on CD and they would do their bits and send them back and that seems to be the way a lot of people work now and it works great Talking of Dio, back in the 80’s you were a part
of the ‘Hear n’ Aid’ project that Ronnie is credited with putting
together, and you got to play a solo on the record EO - That’s right, it was a great day. It was a lot of fun to be with all of those people in the same room, jamming together, we had a great three days in LA and it was a really cool experience. I wish that it had got more exposure like the Michael Jackson one did but at least it did something and in the rock community it was the only one of its kind ‘A Twisted Christmas’ did very well for you, why
a Christmas album? It seems like you took a gamble that paid off EO - Well it started off as something we just really wanted to have fun with and then when it came out last November it really seemed to take off, we got together to do some recording in the summer and someone said "well why don't we do a Christmas album" (laughs) and it seemed like a great idea and like you say it could have gone the other way but it actually turned out to be really successful and people loved it. We also have a DVD coming out soon of the three shows that we did lat year
So what’s happening with Twisted Sister over the next few months? EO - We’re headlining the Hard Rock Hell
show at Butlins in Minehead on November 10th, and then we will
probably do some festivals next summer. We also have a date in
Finland soon and then a couple of Christmas shows in the US. We're
also working on a TV appearance, we did Jay Leno last year and it
was a lot of fun, a really great show to be on Are you surprised the band are still around after all these years? EO - I had a feeling…its like everything always
comes back, look at Led Zeppelin getting back together. A lot of the
current scene is quite dry and there is a resurgence in the old
classics that you are really aware of and its good to see that
happening Any of the newer bands that have impressed you? EO - Audioslave, Stone Temple Pilots, I’m quite open minded to quite a few things really. My Chemical Romance are a cool band, I know they are categorised as an "emo" band but they are still cool and so are Green Day. But I still enjoy bands such as AC/DC and Metallica Eddie it’s been really good talking to you. Is there anything else you wanted to say about the show? EO - Well I really think people should come and check it out, it’s a rocking show and the girls are beautiful (laughs) so that really makes my day Many thanks to Eddie for his time and to Kate for co-ordinating the interview.
