Breed 77

Interview John Consterdine

Breed 77 seem to have been on a never ending tour since the release of In My Blood in 2006. Quickly following that up with Spanish language album Un Encuentro and endlessly on the road John Consterdine had a chat with the band during their last UK tour...

You kicked off your tour a few days ago, how has it been so far?

Danny Felice (Guitar): We started in Belfast and up to now it’s been very good, we haven't been to Ireland much, last time our singer got ill and we had to cancel the shows there, but it was really good and better than we expected.
Adam Lewis (Drums): Yeah definitely, it was an awesome crowd who were really up for it.

Are you looking forward to the rest of the tour?

Adam: Yeah, especially tonight in Manchester, as its always good for us, and London obviously even though it’s quite stressful because all your friends are there and there’s all industry people there its always buzzing in London its not always a chilled out show.

You have a new single out in April (Look At Me Now) and the new album (Un Encuentro) out soon

Danny: We have been trying to secure a deal in the Spanish and Latin speaking countries for that album so we can release it there too.

What can people expect from that?

Danny: Well it’s in Spanish
Adam: (laughs) People might not understand it
Danny: It’s like a best of Breed but in Spanish. The band was from Gibraltar always and over time we have changed members but that was always our native language. Gibraltar is a British colony so we learnt to speak both English and Spanish.

You also covered Zombie on your new single, is that because people liked it so much live?

Danny: We did that song at a gig we did in Gibraltar last year and then we tried it at the Bulldog Bash and it worked, and we thought that the reaction from the crowd was really good. We've never done a cover before with Breed, we've toyed with the idea but never actually recorded a cover, so we just experimented and did it.

You also played Get in the Ring recently, how did that go?

Adam: Interesting to say the least. Its one of those things, it’s for the TV so we just went out and had a laugh, we don't expect to win and we don't really care for a better phrase but you know its something cool to do.

The last I heard you were in first, its between you and Turisas

Adam: Yeah that’s what we heard which is cool; there were some interesting bands that night
Danny: It was very strange because Turisas image is heavy but they don't play heavy music.
Adam: Yeah its not metal.
Danny: its like folk, it was weird I thought it was gonna be something heavier, you know I’m into heavy music like the Norwegian scene, like Dimmu Borgir and stuff, and I thought their image was heavy but then they pulled out the violin and I’m like oh!
Adam: Yeah and the accordion.

Do you think you may have won over some new fans?

Danny: It was a good show so we hope so.
Adam: Yeah totally, it'll be good to get out there on TV, its being played a lot I believe and hopefully there’s always going to be someone new who will see us.

Get in the Ring was in a boxing ring, but what’s the strangest place you've played?

Adam: Didn't you play on a pirate ship or something?
Danny: Yeah, we played on a ship that belonged to the Danish Navy, in a port in Gibraltar.

Are there any bands you guys would like to tour with?

Danny: Iron Maiden.
Adam: Led Zeppelin in 1974.
Danny: That probably won't happen. But Jimi Hendrix is another.
Adam: That definitely won't happen.

What do you think of the current trends in music like emo and rap metal etc

Danny: I don't like rap metal and I don't like emo either.
Adam: I don't know. A lot of it seems to be very silly I guess, but there’s no irony involved, you think c'mon man, you've got to be able to take the mick out of yourself a little bit, you've got to have a bit of humour about what you do. Not like funny silly like the Chilli Peppers used to be, I think everyone kind of takes themselves too seriously.
Danny: I preferred the days when metal was metal, you know when you had someone with a patch of Whitesnake and Rainbow and Iron Maiden and there wasn't a problem but now there’s just so much division. At the end of the day it’s the press really, they make up those divisions.

Have you got any more covers planned?
Adam: I'm always thinking about stuff.
Danny: Venom's At War With Satan (laughs).
Adam: I just learnt to play Hey Yah by Outkast on the guitar so I think we should cover that.
Danny: I'll do the drums.
Adam: Yeah definitely we could swap over.

Breed playing black metal would be quite interesting.

Danny: I don't think our singer would like it though.
Adam: It would be pretty sweet just doing lots of blast beats for a while.

Adam you joined the band last year, do you think you've slotted into the band well?

Adam: Yeah, I still can't speak Spanish (laughs) but these guys are super chilled, you know working isn't a difficult thing its really easy and I’ve enjoyed myself, I get a lot of freedom within the boundaries of playing.
Danny: He brings his style in on the older tracks as well.
Adam: Yeah coming from a totally different background musically I bring a lot of different influences I like heavy extreme stuff and jazz and we crossover in certain places, but yeah I’m really excited to start writing some stuff, and hitting the studio and doing what I do with the songs from scratch

What can we expect from Breed 77 for the rest of 2007?

Adam: More shows then try and get some new stuff out there at some stage, hitting lots of new countries, like Spanish speaking countries, Japan, places like that.

What about a new studio album?

Danny: Well we have to compose it first.
Adam: Yeah exactly (laughs).
Danny: It becomes like a drug, once we have the songs we have to let them out and can't contain them, so when we have some new songs we'll go and record them.
Adam: Either this year or next.
